ASYLUM OF WIRES AND FACTIONS

How else could it have occurred to man to divide the cosmos, on the analogy of day and night, summer and winter, into a bright day-world and a dark night-world peopled with fabulous monsters, unless he had the prototype of such a division in himself, in the polarity between the conscious and the invisible and unknowable unconscious?

-Carl Jung

Light Creates Shadow is the musical creation of singer/guitarist, Marc Changnon. Changnon is a unique, gifted songwriter and a veteran of the Portland Oregon music scene. In 2011, after releasing a lo-fi acoustic album, 2 Windows, he spent a year supporting the record in the Pacific Northwest. By 2014, the sound and band had drastically changed. Changnon had formed the band that he had always dreamed of. An intuitive, organic, dynamic collection of characters that clicked immediately and he knew it was integral to capture the sound right away. A sound that Changnon had been hearing in his head since the moment he had picked up a guitar. Joined by guitarist Antreo Pukay, bassist Jacob Shue (later, Jered Johnson) and drummer Frank Canepa, they gave birth to a profoundly unique sound. Combining progressive dynamics, ethereal vocals, intricately woven passages that drift through unorthodox arrangements culminating into an epic wall of sound that resonates like a scream under water. The alchemy was enough to catch the attention of talented engineer/producer Brandon Eggleston (Swans, Modest Mouse, The Mountain Goats, Pelican, Helmet, Grails). In July, LCS entered Isaac Brock’s (Modest Mouse) invite only studio “Ice Cream Party”. After seven 13-15 hour days the EP, Emerge From The Illusion, was tracked and mixed. It would go on to be mastered by the renowned engineer Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, REM, Death Cab For Cutie, Isis, Caspian) at RFI in Seattle, WA.

Light Creates Shadow draws musical influence from artists such as: The Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate, Alcest, Russian Circles, HUM, Caspian, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Sigur Ros, Elliott Smith and Radiohead. LCS is a conceptual, art rock band, utilizing live visuals to enhance the sensory experience. Lyrically the songs hover in a stream of consciousness that penetrates the deepest recesses if the listener is willing to go on the journey. Confronting taboo, fringe subjects through their music such as; mental illness, death, dreams and synchronicity are what separate LCS from the pack of regurgitated and rehashed contemporary bands. LCS conceptually represents a non-dual approach to philosophical opposites and dichotomies using sound and art as a platform, leaving room for subjective, abstract interpretation, emotional connection and contemplation. Having a conceptual framework as a foundation for the project, gives context to the music as the depth of the experience can translate into personal and collective meaning for the listener.
